New Calculator Tool Praises Low Lifetime Cost of Composite Decking

A calculator tool developed by America’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – which measures the long-term cost of ownership for different forms of decking – has given the thumbs-up to composite decking.

Part of the EPA’s GreenScapes programme, which provides cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for landscaping, the Decking Alternatives Cost Calculator is designed to measure the relative average lifetime costs of decking manufactured from four key material types: recycled HDPE plastic, recycled plastic/wood composite, cedar/redwood and pressure treated southern yellow pine.

By estimating the initial, 3 year, 6 year, 10 year, lifetime, and average annual costs, the EPA hopes to demonstrate that, while initial costs may be higher for composite decking, the average cost per year is the lowest of the four materials because of lower maintenance and the fact that the decking does not need to be treated regularly.
