Following a report that suggests that 41% of homeowners would rather pay for a professional builder rather than carry out DIY, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has warned that rogue builders and other traders may seek to capitalise.
"If more people are going to hire a builder – whether it be for simple or complex tasks – they must approach it in the right way and protect themselves from rogue traders,” explains Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB.
The best security comes from only hiring a building professional who has been recommended by a friend or affiliated to a professional trade association like the FMB.
The FMB outlines top tips for home owners, including: to ask at least three tradespeople to quote for the work; to speak to previous customers and, where possible, to visit a recently completed project; to secure a written contract before the work begins.
“These straightforward checks can make all the difference and will help people avoid any unnecessary stress,” concludes Brian Berry. “After all, that's the whole point of commissioning a professional to do the work."
